WOMEN: Protect your dignity and self-respect
Written by Dianne CollinsDear Editor,
I read with great interest the article by the Honourable Marcella Liburd, St. Kitts and Nevis Minister of Gender Affairs urging women and girls to protect dignity and self-respect, calls for an end to obscene and vulgar advertising posters, which appeared in last week’s newspapers.
I commend her stance. I too am disgusted by these advertising posters that I see from time to time in St. Kitts and Nevis advertising music concerts and drag racing. The young ladies who adorn these posters lower their dignity and their self-esteem by appearing in these almost pornographic displays. It sets a bad example to all other women and especially to our young girls who are at a vulnerable and impressionable age. Women who are closest to young girls are the ones who set the example for what it is to be a woman. I hope these children do not see this type of modeling as something to “aspire” to.
Of course in the advertising world “sex” sells, as provocative images are being used to sell everything from cars, perfumes to clothes for example. I assume that these young ladies get paid for their posing but nevertheless must they stoop so low to gain money? If these young ladies are from a modelling agency, don’t these agencies have a responsibility to set high standards in the way they conduct their business. They should not be compromising the dignity of women. These posters lower the dignity of these women in the eyes of men. Men are visually orientated and the type of images displayed in advertising can implicate or influence abuse that is taking place on Nevis.
The female gender over the last two centuries has made great strides in freedom from slavery, legal employment rights in the workplace, the right to vote and the right to live with dignity. These young ladies have taken a step backward: as they have willingly entered into a form of mental enslavement by being pliable to the whims of their masters.
In the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis there are many women of wholesome character who are inspirational role models in every sector of our society. These are the women to emulate not vacuous sexual symbols.
Ladies respect yourself!
