Imagine a leader leading

Written by Sir Ronald Sanders

Imagine if a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Head of Government were to say boldly the following truths however inconvenient they may be to other Heads of Governments:

Dear Editor:

Nevis has so many wonderful artists on island and around the world and world artists who come and go to Nevis, love her and express that love in their art. I support all artists, musicians, storytellers, singers, dancers, poets, writers, actors, playwrights , film makers, radio personalities and documentarians, sculptors, painters, jewelry and clothing designers, crafters with straw,

Accentuate the positive and banish the negative

Written by Dianne Collins

Dear Editor:

At some time in our lives we have come across people who have a negative attitude towards life, always talking negatively about everyone and everything. After some time in their company

The news was all over the media, there was much hoopla and the pictures showed Dr. Douglas shovel in hand breaking the soil. Let us all hope that he was not actually digging the grave for the RLB International Airport Terminal.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Written by Editor

Recently, the local and international media have featured a string of unflattering headlines about Nevis. “Nevis Election Petition Trial.” “Nevis High Court Broken Into!”  “U.S. Supreme Court

Night Blight of the Stars!

Written by Amba Trott

I expect that a lot of people will be upset with my comments this week. Some have told me in the past that I should keep negative comments to myself so I’m going to meet them halfway - I’m going to make this short and withhold some of the things I’m bothered about. I went to the “Night of the Stars” concert at the Cultural Centre in Nevis last Friday. Alone. I didn’t even bother to ask any of my friends or relatives if they would like to come along too. Good thing I didn’t, whew – they might have been even more disappointed than I was. In fact, they might even have left earlier. At least I stayed till the bitter end. Actually it was more like bittersweet, I’ll explain about that later.

The Way I see it

Written by Curtis Morton

The way I see it, people should not be vexed with people when they see them doing their jobs well.  Mark you, I do have a little problem with some persons who in carrying out their assignments, stick to the letter of the law and give the impression that they cannot ‘flex a little.’ I think that the rules of your work place should serve as a general guide but that you should be able to ‘use your coconut’ and know when and where you can make little adjustments that would only help to enhance pure societal living, without breaking any laws.

Oil’s well that ends well

Written by Sir Ronald Sanders

Oil wells off the coast of South America’s only English-speaking country, Guyana, are now being drilled in earnest.  Already Guyana’s economy is benefitting from millions of dollars being pumped by two companies into their operations.  Should the drilling release the expected millions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas, the country’s economy will boom.

Mr. Walwyn’s response to this issue has raised serious and legitimate concerns in the public.

Once again the integrity of our Electoral System has been undermined under the disguise of “Commonwealth Citizen”, and applied through medium of foreign students of resident offshore universities.

Bike Patrol making mark

Written by Editor

Police officers on bikes are no longer a television image of tropical Hawaii or sunny Miami Beach. Fit men in Dickees shorts can now be seen regularly patrolling the streets of Charlestown. Many a motorist has been seen this week receiving a traffic ticket from members of the patrol unit.

A Perspective

Written by Amba Trott

I am awaiting the judge’s decision in the election Petition case in Nevis with bated breath and a high degree of trepidation. The populace of St. Kitts and Nevis has been simmering in the pressure cooker of political chicanery for over a year with scarcely any let up at all. The atmosphere has been seriously polluted and contaminated by every political party in the federation engaging in rhetorical warfare against opposing viewpoints that have been expressed, as well as against political opponents.

The Way I see it

Written by Curtis Morton

We can learn a lot from our children.  At this time, we on Nevis are very much involved in what is referred to as our ‘Sports term’.  As I watch the youngsters getting involved in the various

Don’t cry for Argentina

Written by Sir Ronald Sanders

The national and regional interests of Commonwealth Caribbean countries would hardly be served by backing Argentina in its long-running dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands.

The Chinese Effect

Concern over the growth of Chinese businesses in St. Kitts and Nevis and other OECS countries appear to be growing. Among the major newspapers that have run stories this week in their

Life Lessons from Archery

Written by Dianne Collins

Dear Editor:

As a child in the 1950’s I watched my fair share of Robin Hood and Cowboys and Indian films in which the bow and arrow played a prominent part in the action. I was fascinated by the bow and arrow it was something different and easy to do. In the early 1970’s while I was at college, I was given a choice of non-credit courses to fill in a time slot during one of my semesters and one of the courses on offer was archery. I was excited at the prospect of learning archery, so I signed up.

HOW CAN THEY?

Written by G A Dwyer Astaphan

My friend Sam Condor could be recorded as the Deputy Leader who has been most disrespected by the Leader of both his political Party and Government in the history of St. Kitts & Nevis.
We remember that Mr. Michael Powell, the Deputy Leader of the People’s Action Movement and the Deputy Prime Minister of St. Kitts & Nevis, had been unceremoniously kicked out of Government back in the early 1990’s.

Sorry, Sorry...!

Written by Amba Trott

The mode of campaigning by both political parties leading up to the July 11 election in Nevis last year, had so traumatised me that I ceased making any public comments for almost six months. Sorry about that. In my public commentaries I had been pleading in vain for the politicians and their campaign officials to be more reasonable in attitude, tone and action, for it was

The Way I see it

Written by Curtis Morton

The way I see it, we need to go back to the type of community living that most of our grandparents spoke about.  Based on what they said, in those days, people were not so concerned about how much money they made.  They did not sell everything they produced.  I understand that this is the way they worked out their Maths:

Our Social Security system celebrates its thirty-fourth year of operation this year. In several articles, publications and media presentations we have provided information related to our performance and operations. The Way I see it

Written by Curtis Morton

The way I see it, a funeral is an EXPENSIVE exercise. My family members and I just had the unfortunate task of arranging a funeral service for our beloved Mom, Mildred Morton.  Obviously, I had to be really naïve, because I was thinking that it would range in the vicinity of about---let’s say…….$10,000.00 EC.

Subways

Written by Amba Trott

I’ve never been on the subway in Nevis. In fact, I don’t believe there is one, although I realise that there may be some things in Nevis that I am not aware of. For instance, I sometimes learn of events a good while after they have happened. But a subway in Nevis is surely something that would have caught my attention by now if there really was one. Something of that nature would
